Adaptive yoga classes are for individuals living with mobility disabilities such as partial or total paralysis, amputation, spinal cord injury, severe arthritis, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, brain injury, spina bifida and cerebral palsy. Adaptive class participants must be able to follow simple instructions. We welcome students who do and do not use a wheelchair. Ambulatory Adaptive yoga classes are for individuals who are able to walk but live with impaired mobility or balance issues. The ambulatory class is for our students who can walk in on their own and transfer to and from the floor with little or no assistance. This class includes standing poses and frequent position changes. Yoga for Intellectual Disabilities is specially designed for individuals with intellectual disabilities. A caregiver or PCA is required to attend the first class with the student and may be asked to attend all classes at the yoga instructor’s discretion.
INDIVIDUAL ONE-ON-ONE SESSIONS
We offer individual instruction through one-on-one sessions that also can include family members. Individual sessions are beneficial as a complement to group class or if participation in group classes is not possible. These sessions allow the teacher to customize instructions and poses to specific conditions and are helpful for developing a home practice.
FEES & REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Thanks to the generous support of our donors we subsidize the cost of adaptive classes and individual instruction for those living with mobility disabilities. MBS also offers two classes exclusively for veterans, one of which is for women only. These classes are free to veterans (and a family member accompanying them) as is any class held in our MBS studio. For more information click here.
