Yoga, Disability, & Transformation

In this series of experiential, online gatherings, the MBS community comes together to explore, share, and support the ‘inside’ story of disability.  Living with a disability fosters unique insight and wisdom, and this is a forum through which it can be shared.  Each session presents a conversation theme framed up by our founder Matthew Sanford, but collectively discussed within the group at large.  The resulting conversations are powerful, heartfelt, and helpful.  Each session also features a yoga practice inspired by the conversation theme.  These gatherings are intended to revolve around the experience of disability, but everyone is welcome and there is no fee to attend.

I look forward to seeing you soon…

Yoga, Disability, & Transformation 2024

The Intersectionality of Trauma, Loss, and Disability

Obviously, living with trauma, loss, or disability are different experiences. And yet they also share similarities. Within the disability community, we run the gamut. Some of us live with overt trauma, some with more overt disabilities, and all of us have experienced various forms of loss. Some of us have acquired a disability, some have been born with one. By definition, living with a disability involves some degree of traumatization and some degree of loss. Join our community for a lively, firsthand discussion of the differences and intersectionality of trauma, loss, and disability. Through a shared practice, we will also explore how yoga can positively impact all three.

Exploring Invisible Disabilities

What happens when your disability is not obvious, when people cannot see it, and don’t believe in the difficulty of your experience? And let’s be honest, even people who live with more overt disabilities live with other unseen issues that nobody sees. Join our community as we discuss the nature of living with invisible disabilities. A number of our students will share their real life experiences with less visible disabilities and the larger group will discuss this issue as a whole. As always, we will uncover both differences and common ground within the wide-ranging experience of disability. Again, through a shared practice, we will explore how yoga can positively impact all forms of disability.

Voice without Voice: The Pigeonholes of Disability

While there has been improvement in the extent to which people with disabilities are heard within the culture at large, we are still perceived through the lens of limiting stereotypes. We are gaining voice but without true voice. This happens within our families, friends, jobs, political arenas, and on and on. Please join our community’s lively discussion of the pigeonholes through which our voices are heard. We will share our workarounds and strategies for breaking down such invisible barriers. Our shared yoga practice will focus on how to stay in our bodies while we know our insights are not truly heard.

Disability, Healing, and the Sensation of Wholeness

Can the experience of disability be healed? Does it need to be? What would it look like? Join our community’s discussion of what healing means in the context of disability. Hear real life stories of experiences small and large in which healing occurs. Our shared yoga practice will focus of the sensation of wholeness, one that transcends psychological acceptance and begins to seep from body-to-mind.
