As you know from my last blog, I am intrigued by koans, parables, and short sayings. Such sayings have shifted me more than all the complicated learning I have ever done.
I came across one this morning. Of the bookshelf, I grabbed a book on The Gospel of Thomas. I am not a biblical scholar by any stretch of the imagination. But for those of you who do not know, Thomas was a disciple of Jesus. He wrote down what he claimed were some of Jesus’ secret sayings and teachings. Needless to say, his version of Jesus’ teaching did not make it into the Bible. Here’s what I read today:
“”Jesus said, “Recognize what is in your sight, and that which is hidden from you will become plain to you. For there is nothing hidden which will not become manifest.””
What a wonderful utterance. So hopeful, so promising. Everything is open to us. Nothing will be kept from us. This is the design of the Universe. Normally I might read such a saying and think, “Sounds nice but…” In this case, however, I tend to trust the teacher.
This saying inspires me to pay attention to my life. I hope it does the same for you.
