“Who are the early adopters in integrative health?” the big voice booms. Well actually, it was a very high level executive from a behemoth leading healthcare provider and insurer. She is asking me what sections, what departments, and what individuals might embrace a more integrative approach in the delivery of care, in leadership, and in their personal lives. This organization is on the cutting edge in realizing the importance and benefit of a more holistic approach. They have realized an integrative approach does not just mean increasing the kinds of modalities that they offer patients, for example, making massage, acupuncture, and healing touch available. This organization has recognized that an integrative approach must include their caregivers, their leadership, and the patients and families that they serve. They realize that healing is a shared journey, that a more holistic approach means a cultural deepening for their entire organizations and everyone they serve.
This organization is way ahead of other providers. More than that, they have thousands and thousands of employees. They are not shying away from the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. For the rest of us, this is reason for hope…things are changing in the healthcare business and the best of our humanity is leading the charge.
The question remains. Who are the early adopters of integrative healthcare? They are seekers. They are caregivers and patients. They are people who have fallen through the cracks. They are living in a world that is out of joint and they want to feel better. They want the world to be a better place and they want to feel hopeful.
“Who are the early adopters?” the big voice booms. I hope you are.
